It started with a winter custom

In Gunma, konjac was left outside to freeze and dry through the winter. What was left was soft enough to wash a baby’s skin. Families had done this for about a hundred years.

Yamamoto Farm began making the sponge as a product in 1990, so it could be made all year round instead of only after a cold winter.

Konjac from Gunma

The raw material is konjac powder from corms grown in Gunma. Gunma produces most of Japan’s konjac, and the farm works with local growers and millers.

Two weeks, mostly by hand

Konjac powder, water and a setting agent are mixed, shaped and heated. The pieces are then frozen and dried in the farm’s own process, which opens up the fine structure inside.

One batch takes about two weeks. Much of the work is still done by hand. No antibacterial or antifungal agents are added.

How it feels to use

The sponge arrives dry and hard. It softens in water within a minute or two and becomes light and slippery, closer to jelly than to a normal sponge.

Three steps

Three steps for using a konjac sponge: soak in water, squeeze gently, then hang to dry by its string

1. Soak in water until soft.   2. Squeeze out the excess and wash.   3. Rinse, press the water out and hang it up to dry.

Colours and sizes

The round face sponge is the main item and accounts for most of what the farm makes. Square sponges for babies and larger sponges for the body are made as well. Standard and organic konjac powder are both available.

Paper and cotton string, no plastic

Export packaging uses paper and cotton string instead of plastic film. The sponge itself is a plant material and breaks down after use.
